February 20, 2017

  • The spine is a very intracate structure comprising bones, ligaments, tendons, muscles, sensitive nerves and nerve roots.

  • It acts as protection for the spinal cord and nerve roots to relay messages to and from the brain and the rest of the body.

  • It acts to absorb shock and stress as we move and allows us flexibility - particularly in the lower back and neck, allowing us to bend and twist.

  • The bones, discs and joints together with the muscles allow us to maintain an upright posture.

The Cervical Spine comprises 7 vertebral bones which are strong and flexible allowing us movement in all directions .

The Thoracic Spine comprises 12 vertebral bones which attach to the rib cage.

The Lumbar Spine comprises 5 vertebral bones which carry the most load with the least structural support and is the area most likely to sustain an injury.
